Hazardous Materials Instructor Training Introductory Course - Virtual

This is an introductory Train the Trainer course for hazardous materials instructors who conduct training on Hazardous Materials Regulations for hazmat employees.

This virtual Hazardous Materials Instructor Training Introductory Course will provide hazmat instructors with the tools they need to confidently train hazmat employees on the requirements in Title 49 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Subpart H in Part 172. This course also serves as a refresher course for current instructors who teach hazmat employees.

The course will include instruction, presentations, work projects, team exercises and presentations, individual assignments and coursework, and a pre-test and post-test.

This training course was made possible by a Hazardous Materials Instructor Training grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.

Prerequisites

Have experience as a trainer
Have basic knowledge of Title 49 CFR Part 172
Have some knowledge of the hazardous materials table, shipping papers, marking, labeling and placarding
Currently teach hazmat employees or plan to in the future

Note: This course WILL NOT cover 49 CFR Part 172 in detail but will provide a high-level overview of the regulations. Prior to attending this training, you should already have a working knowledge of the hazardous materials table, shipping papers, marking, labeling and placarding.

What to Expect

This virtual course will include instructor-led training, a breakout session with team leaders to complete group presentations on assigned topics, and individual exercises.
All training materials will be provided, including hazardous materials and safety regulations, the CVSA North American Standard Out-of-Service Criteria, and preparatory and supplemental information.
Participants will be given a pre-test on the CVSA Learning portal the week prior to class. Participants may also complete a course (one to two hours) on the CVSA Learning portal before the class begins.
Students will be given and must pass a post-test. The post-test will be an individual effort using only the books and class material provided during the training. A score of at least 70% on the post-test is required to pass the course and receive a certificate of completion. A participant who scores lower than 70% or chooses not to take the final exam will receive a certificate of attendance.

Schedule

This virtual course will be delivered, Tuesday through Thursday, June 4-6, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. ET each day.

Training Delivery

This course will be offered using the Zoom video-conferencing platform and the CVSA Learning portal. You will be sent a Zoom link prior to the start of the training course.
You will receive instruction and view presentations in Zoom and complete team exercises in Zoom’s “breakout rooms.” You will also complete assigned tasks through the CVSA Learning portal. Therefore, to take this course, you will need access to Zoom and the CVSA Learning portal.
Course participants will be sent course login information the week before the course begins.

There is no registration fee for the HMIT course; however, registration is required.

Virtual Events Code of Conduct

CVSA is committed to providing a safe, productive and welcoming environment for all virtual meeting participants. All participants, without exception, are expected to abide by this virtual events code of conduct across any and all technologies used to execute a CVSA virtual event. Examples of unacceptable behavior are:

Unauthorized sharing of login credentials with another user, including unregistered users; any unregistered user found participating will be required to pay the full registration fee, including the late registration fee
Recording, copying and/or sharing of any media, including screenshots
Engaging in unsafe practices while participating in a virtual event, such as driving a car
Harassment, disrespect, intimidation or discrimination in any form
Verbal or written abuse of any participant, including, but not limited to, comments related to race, color, ethnicity, age, religion, national origin, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, etc.
Sharing inappropriate, nude and/or sexual images
Threatening or stalking a participant

To report an incident of unacceptable behavior, please contact CVSA Executive Director Collin Mooney or CVSA Deputy Executive Director Adrienne Gildea. CVSA reserves the right to take any action deemed necessary and appropriate, including immediate removal from the meeting without warning or refund, in response to any incident of unacceptable behavior. CVSA may also, at its discretion, prohibit attendance at any future meeting, virtually or in person.

Consent to Multimedia Use

Registration and attendance at and participation in CVSA meetings and other activities – in-person or virtually – constitutes an agreement by the registrant to CVSA’s use and distribution of the registrant’s or attendee’s image or voice in photographs, videotapes, electronic reproductions, and audiotapes of such events and activities.

Copyright Acknowledgement

By registering and attending the event, an attendee may participate or contribute to discussions regarding the Standards and CVSA Materials (“work product”) and hereby acknowledges that it is their intent and understanding that the intellectual property, including copyright in and to the work product, and all derivative works and/or any modifications and variations of the work product, did, does and will vest solely in CVSA.
