First Third-Party ELD Certifier Accredited by Transport Canada
On Oct. 26, 2020, Transport Canada announced that FPInnovations was the first third-party organization to be accredited to certify electronic logging devices (ELDs). Under Transport Canada’s ELD mandate, all ELDs must be certified that they meet the required technical standards.

FMCSA Seeks MCSAC Nominations
On Oct. 29, 2020, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) published a notice seeking nominations for the Motor Carrier Safety Advisory Committee (MCSAC). MCSAC is a committee comprised of stakeholders from the commercial motor vehicle industry that provides recommendations to FMCSA and the Secretary of Transportation. Nominations are due by Nov. 30.

Update on Exemptions

FMCSA Grants Samsara Windshield Mounting Exemption Request
On Oct. 28, 2020, FMCSA announced the approval of an exemption request from Samsara Networks Inc., allowing Samsara’s AI Dash Cam device to be mounted lower in the windshield on commercial motor vehicles than is currently permitted. The exemption is effective Oct. 28, 2020-Oct. 28, 2025.

NHTSA Denies DTNA Petition of Inconsequential Noncompliance
On Oct. 26, 2020, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the denial of the Daimler Trucks North America’s (DTNA) petition for inconsequential noncompliance. Daimler has determined that the brake lights on certain model year 2011-2019 vehicles illuminate when automatic traction control is activated and as a result do not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108, Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment. NHTSA has determined that the noncompliance is not inconsequential to safety and denied the petition.
