CVSA Offers Online Class 3 Flammable and Combustible Hazardous Materials Course

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) is offering Class 3 flammable and combustible liquids training through its online learning management system, available to all CVSA members. The new hazardous materials training course is an online version of CVSA’s two-day, in-person Regional COHMED Training Course.

This online course provides refresher training on the hazardous materials roadside inspection and offers advanced inspection knowledge and tools with a specific focus on flammable and combustible liquid hazardous materials. Course participants will learn about hazard communication with an emphasis on flammable and combustible liquids, the toxicology of flammable and combustible liquids, and common terminology associated with toxicology, as well as the use of the DOT Emergency Response Guidebook, NFPA 704 marking system and safety data sheets. Students will learn about cargo tank requirements for flammable and combustible liquids and applicable exceptions and special provisions. Participants will gain an understanding of the special permit process, common special permits applicable to flammable and combustible liquids, and enforcing special permit violations.

CVSA has taken its two-day, in-person Class 3 flammable and combustible liquids training and turned it into an approximately16-hour online course that CVSA members can take anytime, anywhere, at a speed that’s comfortable for the individual learner. The course has 31 modules; however, all 31 modules do not need to be completed in one sitting. Students can start, stop and resume the course at any time, except during a test or work project.

As soon as the course is complete, the student will receive his or her score right away. Students who successfully complete the course and receive an overall score of 80% or higher will be awarded with a unique certificate of completion for their records to demonstrate the skills gained.

This course is free of charge to all CVSA members and accessible via the CVSA member portal. Visit cvsa.org/memberportal to log in to your account. Select the “Online Learning” tab to enter CVSA’s learning management system. You’ll find the new “Class 3 Flammable and Combustible Hazardous Materials” in the course catalog, along with other courses which may be of interest.

This online training course was made possible by the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration’s Community Safety Grant Program.
