Surface Transportation Authorization Extended

On Oct. 28, Congress passed a short-term extension of the authorization of surface transportation programs, extending authorization through Dec. 3. Surface transportation program funding was last authorized in the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act and previously extended to Oct. 31. The infrastructure package passed by the Senate in August contains long-term reauthorization of surface transportation programs but has not yet been passed by the House. The short-term extensions have been to allow for ongoing negotiations in the House around passage of the infrastructure package. This package or another short-term extension will need passed by Dec. 3 to prevent a shutdown of surface transportation programs at the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).
