According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2013, 3,154 people were killed in distraction-affected crashes and 424,000 were injured. Any death or injury as a result of distraction is one too many.
An in-cab driving study of commercial truck drivers by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute indicated that, by far, the most dangerous distraction observed was texting. The study revealed that truck drivers who texted while driving had 23 times the risk of being involved in a crash or near-crash incident.
Operation Safe Driver aims to educate commercial vehicle drivers about the dangers distracted driving, the single largest contributing factor to traffic crashes, through its Defeat Distracted Driving program, which is directly specifically at commercial drivers and the unique distractions and challenges they face every day.
