In the Safety Lane with CVSA
Navigating North American highways today involves skill and quick thinking. In order to do this, vehicles must be in safe operating condition and drivers must be alert and aware of their surroundings. Periodically, In the Safety Lane with CVSA discusses subjects on safety and security that are important to all who work in the commercial motor vehicle profession — both government and industry — and includes tips and news to help everyone who travels our nation's highways to steer clear of dangerous situations and avoid injuries and fatalities.

Operation Safe Driver 2008Monday, October 20 , 2008 Each year more than 44,000 people die on the roadways throughout North America – many of which are the direct result of unsafe and aggressive driving practices by both passenger and commercial vehicle drivers. During the week of October 19-25, law enforcement across North America will respond by actively targeting these drivers during a campaign dubbed ‘Operation Safe Driver.’ CVSA, in partnership with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), state, provincial and local law enforcement and industry launched the campaign last year to combat the number of deaths in crashes involving large trucks and passenger vehicles. Operation Safe Driver will hold activities across the United States, Canada and Mexico that aim to increase commercial vehicle and non-commercial vehicle traffic enforcement; safety belt enforcement; driver roadside inspections; driver regulatory compliance; implementation of commercial driver educational and awareness programs to the motor carrier population; and, awareness to the motoring public about safe operations around commercial motor vehicles.
