Student Transportation Safety Task Force

Purpose

Reduce commercial and non-commercial school bus-related crashes, injuries, and deaths through outreach, education, safety, compliance, legislative, policy and regulatory strategies.

Goals

  • Identify problem areas in school bus safety and facilitate cooperative solutions between government and industry.
  • Encourage proper knowledge, skills and behaviors by school bus drivers, safety managers, companies, school districts, school bus transportation users and other motorists about activities to reduce the risk of being involved in a school bus-related crash.
  • Promote best practices and uniform/harmonized approaches to regulations, compliance and enforcement practices as they relate to the school bus industry across North America.
  • Develop uniform driver/vehicle inspection procedures for school buses.
  • Update and maintain, as necessary, changes to the North American Standard Out-of-Service Criteria and inspector training/certification requirements with respect to school bus inspections.
  • Facilitate the development and implementation of an International Policy Framework for school bus safety.
  • Establish a knowledge center of the various local, state and federal regulations and government oversight functions/requirements regarding school bus transportation safety.
  • Facilitate the execution of appropriate research in furtherance of the Task Force’s purpose.
  • Host a symposium on school bus transportation safety.
